TRAGIC COMING-OF-AGE STORY

NICKY: Before the Crown

Biographical Novel + Limited Series 6 × 55 min

In January 1894, Nicky Romanov is twenty-five, in love with a ballerina, happiest with a billiard cue in one hand and a camera in the other, and doing his best not to think about marriage or — much worse — the throne.

By New Year’s Eve, his father is dead, the ballerina is gone, he is married — and the throne he never wanted is his.

Nicky has become Nicholas II.

THE STORY

A young man. A vanishing future.
The year that made Nicholas II

Most stories about Nicholas II are told backwards, from the catastrophe we already know: Rasputin, war, revolution, and the fall of the Romanov world.

In 1894, the future is still open.

At first, the story is intimate, funny and unexpectedly alive. Nicky and his friends are young people who do not know they are historical figures. They flirt, quarrel, drink too much, play billiards, fall in love, take photographs, go to the theatre and make terrible jokes. As the year progresses, the same world gradually changes its meaning:

romantic comedy → family drama → succession drama → tragedy

It all starts when Nicky’s aunt Ella is determined to marry him to her younger sister, Princess Alix of Hesse. Ella and her husband Sergei drive the match forward; Nicky’s parents have their misgivings; Alix herself hesitates. Meanwhile, Nicky tries to preserve the life he already loves.

Again and again, he reaches the point of decision. Again and again, he waits. At first, the consequences are personal: love, friendship, marriage and family loyalty. Later, they become political. The pattern remains the same:

Nicky hesitates. Someone acts. Nicky accepts the result.

By the end of the year, almost everything that defined him has disappeared. Love becomes obligation. Obligation becomes marriage. Illness becomes death. The heir becomes the Emperor.

At its heart, NICKY: Before the Crown asks:

Can Nicky take control of his own life before other people’s choices become his destiny?

The BOOK

NICKY: Before the Crown

Biographical Novel

A deeply researched biographical novel about the fatal year of 1894, when a carefree young heir became Nicholas II, Emperor of Russia — stepping from a vivid romance with Alix of Hesse straight into a tragedy that would reshape the twentieth century.

NICKY: Before the Crown brings to life the glittering world of Europe’s great dynasties on the eve of its collapse. In 1894 Nicholas II is still Nicky — curious, funny, reluctant to grow up — moving between St Petersburg, Coburg, London and Livadia, while family jokes, travel and romance slowly darken into illness, duty and loss. Drawn from diaries, private correspondence, extensive archival research, and the author’s own historical fieldwork on location, the novel follows one fatal year from the inside. By its end, Nicky has become Emperor of Russia — and the reader has seen, almost imperceptibly, how the brilliance of an age began to fracture.
